The well respected Mr Harold Tyson, Scout Leader of the Marigot Community, was found guilty of buggery and has been sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment for buggering one of his
scout members while the boy was asleep.
Mr Tyson always worked with young children and was recognized with trust and respect as many scouts then become cadets before joining the police force or the Fire Department.
"I was sleeping in the camp, "says the victim, "then I woke up because I felt a burning sensation in my bottom. Then I saw Mr Tyson on top of me. I tried to move so he could get of, but he told me, 'relax pardner I almost finish.'"
The victim is most embarrassed by this episode and have been subjected to much ridicule by his peers in the village. "The guys on the block would shout out remarks as I passing. The girls would start laughing after I pass." The victim says it's this ridicule that causes him to hide inside for many weeks at once without going out in the public. "I just want to leave Dominica, and go somewhere , where nobody, don't know me."

Justice Victoria Charles Clarke, the judge in the matter, stated that she had considered both the aggravating and mitigating factors, before sentencing.
She noted that the fact that Mr Tyson was physically and emotionally abused as a child was considered, that the victim who was raped in the anus was above the age of consent, and that Tyson had no previous convictions were all examined.
She pointed out that Tyson has shown no remorse for his actions, the rape was premeditated, since Mr. Tyson waited until the victim fell asleep before he committed the crime, and that penetration was involved were also considered.
Justice Clarke noted that the victim is now psychologically affected, as well as isolated as he has very few friends left and is largely ostracized by his community.
The sentencing started at seven years, with the 2 years Tyson has already spent on remand as no one came forward to bail him, the two years is being deducted. Tyson will spend five years in prison,which in actuality is 3 and a half years since a third of his sentence is deducted inside the prison as a regulation.
The sentence is too lenient. He deserves much more. The person he did this to is already suffering and will have this ordeal in his mind for the rest of his life. But how does someone sleep so heavily that they only felt penetration when it was nearly over?!

DeleteWhen the prison sentence is 5 years the superintendent of the prison explains that a day is one and a half. So 1/3 of the court's sentence is deducted as soon as the prisoner enters the prison. So let's do basic maths...5 years is 60 months. A third subtracted is 20 months. Which remains 40 months. Which is 3 years and 4 months; That is the time Mr. Tyson will spend in Stockfarm Prison.
