Child Abuse Ignored

April 24, 2018|Belles Dominica
There is a thin line between punishment and abuse, this is especially blatantly true to little Chelsea 15, from belles, who was scarred for life by her aunt; Ms. Kerrigan Eugene.  Little Chelsea attends the Wesley High School and has been victimized since she was 12 by her aunt, the abuse worsened to the extent of hot water and hot oil being thrown on her body.

This is just one of the hundreds of cases of domestic violence suffered by our children in Dominica.  The violence is inflicted by those who are entrusted to care for the young ones.

It has been two weeks since this incident and no arrests has been made.  The perpetrator is waiting for little Chelsea to be released from the hospital so the intimidation and battery could continue.  There is a drunken power Ms Eugene is revelling in as Little Chelsea's mother is deceased and her father is of-island.

Where are the teachers who's role is in reporting the child abuse cases (to the Welfare Department) which they are privy to?  Isn't it an offence to ignore a crime if you are aware it is happening?  Shouldn't those who know about it and stay quiet be punished also? The police has been alerted and still they turn a blind eye.  Are we not responsible for our youth anymore?

In most cases children who do find the courage to speak out are not believed.  They find themselves repeating there problems for up to six months before they are given the benefit of a doubt.  When are we going to implement prevention campaigns against child abuse?  Is it when another child is stabbed to death while she sleeps in her warm bed at 2am in the morning?
