Immigrants in USA Living like Cockroaches

by Christine Nice

Immigration rights advocate are worried as a drastic shift in immigration policies have taken effect in America  since President Donald Trump's administration.  These polices are to find, arrest and deport illegal immigrants including those applying for green-cards, whether or not they have committed any crime or offense.

On March 30th, 2017 (in Lawrence, massachusettes; close to Boston) immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Police showed up at Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration (USCIS) in the department where immigrants had already paid the Immigration fees and was in the process of having their interviews with the immigration office in hopes of receiving green-cards.  ICE arrested 5 green-card applicants who had already paid their immigration fees of $1200.  Two of these applicants had no criminal record, the other three had traffic violations.  When asked why they are arresting the applicants , ICE said that they are responding to an investigative tip.

Jail Time

"The arrest and deportation of immigrants under these circumstances are unprecedented," says Susan Church of the American Lawyers Association "because under the Obama administration ICE had been instructed to not arrest immigrants under these circumstances."
ICE is now notified of immigrants appointments and court cases.  They wait for the immigrants to show up and ask for them by name.
Since the deportation process is backed up by 400,000 cases, immigrants must wait (most times up to three years) in a correctional facility before they can be brought before a judge.
Most of these immigrants, do not have legal representation.  Out of 400,000 cases, only fourteen percent have lawyers as volunteer lawyers are scarce, so immigrants who have lawyers are those who pay for their own legal representation. They are locked up in a real prison, with real criminals who are serving time for murder and other heinous crimes.
"This means immigrants who have overstayed on their six month visitation are now afraid to correct their immigration status, and will not show up to their USCIS appointments," says Church.
Now an endless amount of immigrants will go back into the shadows of America like cockroaches living in fear.
